Day 9
Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
It took me a long time to come to terms with this. I like things to be fair. In fact, it really gets to me if things aren’t. I might go as far as to say that I NEED things to be fair. (Maybe not strictly true, but you get the point.) It’s part of my personality and I’m hard-wired for justice and equality. So I REALLY struggle with this.
I don’t have the answers to things like, why do children die? Why is there poverty and hunger in a world with so many resources? Why do the ‘good guys’ seem to finish last? (I know, it’s a generalisation…stick with me here.)
As you know from some of my previous posts on this site, I have been through everything from bereavement to divorce and cancer. Those situations certainly made me ask questions about the fairness of life. But I also learned from those same situations that while life isn’t necessarily fair, or even easy…it can still be good. Bizarrely, in the days that seemed most hopeless I also felt profound love, beauty and goodness in the world around me. I think this is common amongst people who are faced with their mortality in such an extreme way. Somehow, you manage to find the smallest ray of light in the darkest of places and because of that, the light looks even brighter.
I am saddened to say that as the years have gone on and the miracle of being alive has been less in the forefront of my mind, I have also lost a bit of the wonder and amazement of the world around me. Today’s post is a great reminder, even for me, to remember that although life isn’t always fair, there is still goodness to be found. Here, now and all around.
I challenge you to find that goodness today. Please share with us what you find in the comments below. However insignificant it may seem to you, it might be just the thing one of our readers needs to know right this minute. Could I also ask you to please share this post with as many as you can on Facebook, Twitter or email. You could just change someone’s life with the click of your mouse. Thank you so much!
