Tangerine Turtle is my online journal, textbook for life, and telephone to the world sharing my journey as I work on being the best wife, mum, daughter, sister, friend, and human-being that I can be. I try to spend my days learning, laughing, loving… living! I hope that my blog posts, videos, podcasts, and e-books help you on your journey too.
My Full-time Job
My husband and I live in England with our three daughters. As a family we decided that I would stay at home to look after them. It has been a rocky process at times, but I’ve stuck with it and am now enjoying being a work-at-home-parent. I believe firmly that ALL PARENTS ARE WORKING PARENTS- some of them just don’t get paid or recognized for it. My family comes first and like most of us, I wear many different hats, (sometimes at the same time -which can be an interesting fashion statement). I’m a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend and Orthodox Christian. I’m hooked on finding and trying frugal ways to make our home more beautiful and especially love re-purposing projects. I’m an amateur foodie, bookworm, photography buff and generally anything creative makes me happy. I also LOVE 80’s music, John Hughes’ movies, sparkly jewellery and cooking (but hate cleaning up). Oh, and by the way, I’m a bit of a social media nut and would love to hear from you on Twitter: @magzparmenter, on Facebook, or on Google+. If you want to learn even more interesting things about me, read my reverse bucket list- 50 Fab Things.
I have always loved reading and writing. As a child you would often find me with my nose in a book or scribbling stories of my own. I have been blogging since 2006 as a way to share my family’s life with friends and family who were thousands of miles away from us. I realised how much I loved it and a new career was born. Tangerine Turtle is my ‘home’ online, but you can see more of my writing on problogger.net, blissfullydomestic.com, and budgetblonde.com. I am also an occasional blogger for Huffington Post UK and www.untrainedhousewife.com.
Back in the day, when my clothes were always ironed and my Filofax was my best friend, I worked in psychology and mental health in both the US and UK. After the little people came along, I thought about what I might like to do when I went back to work. I knew that I didn’t want to go back to hospital hours but my heart always came back to wanting to help people. My previous experience gave me many tools that I’d love to share with you (my horrible experience of being unable to nurse my oldest daughter even led me to study for an international qualification in breastfeeding!) If you think that coaching might help you or would like to attend one of my workshops please check out my ‘Work With Me‘ section.
A Little Note About the C-word
In 1997, having never lived anywhere but in Maryland, I followed my heart and moved to England to be with the man whom I thought was my prince. It turned out that he was a frog and I found myself on my own 3000 miles away from home, my friends, and my family. In the same week that he left, I was diagnosed with cancer and was given a prognosis of two years to live. I’m a bit of a research-hound, so I found out all about cancer and treatment options and in the end, chose to switch to a mainly vegan diet which was proven to help with healing and also focused on my relationship with God. God answered back through the prayers of thousands of people all over the world, and only 18 months after my diagnosis, I was miraculously healed of every bit of the cancer. I have been cancer-free ever since (although I haven’t followed a vegan diet for the last few years). And don’t worry…two years later, I really DID meet my prince Many people have been inspired by my story and I am available as a speaker for groups big or small.
Why the Tangerine Turtle?
I chose the turtle as part of my logo for several reasons…it is a personal joke from my high school days when I would wear turtlenecks all the time, even with shorts…(it was the 80’s, what can I say?) The other reason is because it fits with my life motto- “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” ~ George Eliot. You might remember the story of The Hare and the Tortoise, where the slow, steady tortoise wins the race. This is also what this site is about. Achieving our goals and dreams by taking small, steady steps. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, we’ll get there! When I was planning this blog, I was brainstorming with one of my lifelong friends. I was telling her that I needed to come up with a name and what the blog was all about. I wanted something to go along with the Turtle…something catchy, but also something with meaning. I knew that there would be colours to brand the site with, so it would be nice to tie it all together. We came up with several options and when I said ‘tangerine’, we both agreed that it sounded good together…‘Tangerine Turtle’…but when she told me the attributes that the colour tangerine represented, I knew it was ‘the one’.
Creativity. Enthusiasm. Confidence. Comfort. Joy.
This is a place where we can dream BIG dreams and work on making them come true. We are all human beings helping each other be our best selves. So settle into a comfy chair, enjoy a steaming mug of your favourite drink and have a look around. I’m so glad you’re here
